Two or three single pendants or one linear fixture look great above most kitchen islands. A good rule of thumb is to hang the pendant 30 to 36 inches over the counter and space pendants about 24 to 30 inches apart. Final spacing will depend on fixture size, island length, sightlines, and manufacturer’s instructions. Dimmable fixtures and bulbs let one setup work for both prep and dinner.
One of the quickest ways to change how a kitchen looks and feels is to swap in new pendant lights. Keep cabinets, counters, and the layout; just change the fixtures hanging over them. A sort of refresh is good in the fall: the nights get darker, the kitchen gets busier, and better light over the island comes in every single day.
This guide begins with the practical aspects: how to size pendant lighting for a kitchen island, how far apart to space fixtures, and how high to hang them. Then it goes through six picks from Modern Lights. Three suit counters, sinks, and small rooms. There are three island designs planned, from a tight cluster to long linear units. How to Size, Space and Hang Kitchen and Island Pendants
Begin with the island, not the fixture. Measure the length and width. Note the height of the ceiling. Determine if the light will need to light prep space or seating or both. Those numbers narrow the choice faster than browsing does.
Single, grouped or linear. A single pendant suits a small island, a sink or the end of a peninsula. Two or three matching pendants cover a typical island and create a repeating rhythm. A linear pendant runs one long fixture along the island, which reads as a single clean line across the room.
The two-thirds guideline. Many designers aim for a total lighting footprint of roughly two-thirds of the island's length. On a 6-foot (72-inch) island, that is about 48 inches: two pendants, or one linear fixture close to 4 feet long. On an 8-foot (96-inch) island, it is about 64 inches: three pendants or a 5-foot linear fixture. Treat this as a starting point, not a rule.
Hanging height. Hanging the bottom of the fixture 30 to 36 inches above the countertop is a common starting range. It keeps light close to the work surface without blocking views across the kitchen. Go higher for tall ceilings, tall household members or large shades that interrupt sightlines.
Spacing. For individual pendants, about 24 to 30 inches between fixture centers works in many kitchens, adjusted for shade diameter. Leave at least 6 inches between the outer pendants and the island edges so nobody bumps a shade.
Light color and dimming. Warm white at 2700K to 3000K is a popular choice for kitchens that double as gathering spaces. Dimming lets the same fixture go from bright prep light to a softer evening level, but only when the fixture, bulbs and wall dimmer are compatible. Check each product's specs, since not every pendant is dimmable.
These are general design guidelines. Always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions for the fixture you choose. Once you have rough measurements, browse pendant lighting by size and finish.
Best Kitchen Pendant Lights for Counters, Sinks and Peninsulas
Not every kitchen needs a line of island pendants. A single pendant often does more in the spots that recessed lights miss: the sink, a peninsula end, a breakfast nook, or a narrow galley run.
One pendant on the faucet over a sink provides light where you rinse and wash and gives a window wall a center of attention. The edge on a peninsula is marked by a pendant at the open end, lighting the stools. In a breakfast nook, a single, larger shade over the table can serve as a small chandelier. In a small kitchen, one nice big pendant often looks cleaner than two that are crowded.
A few checks keep the choice practical:
- Shade size: smaller shades of 6 to 10 inches suit sinks and tight spots, while 15 inches and up holds its own over a table or nook.
- Location rating: check whether a fixture is rated for damp or only dry locations, especially near a sink.
- Bulb and dimming: confirm the socket type, whether bulbs are included and whether the fixture is dimmable before you plan a dimmer.
- Hanging hardware: a cord makes height easy to set, while a downrod gives a steady, fixed drop and can suit sloped ceilings when the fixture supports it.
The three picks below cover a broad dome, a small stone-and-brass accent and a budget-friendly glass dome. This table compares them on size, finish, price and placement.
| Product | Size | Finish | Current Price | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bolio 1-Light 16-in Pendant | 15.75 in diameter | Matte Black | $178.00 | Breakfast nooks, peninsulas, larger counters |
| Lucent 1 Light 6 Inch Pendant | 6 in | Satin Brass, Alabaster | $449.00 | Sinks, coffee bars, accent spots |
| Laphia 10.75'' Pendant | 8 in W x 10.75 in H | Modern Gold | $75.90 | Small counters, sets of two or three |
Bolio 16-Inch Matte Black Pendant
Vinci Lighting
Bolio 1-Light 16-in Matte Black Pendant Dimmable 60W
$178.00
- 15.75 in diameter
- Dimmable
- Damp rated
Vinci Lighting’s Bolio is our number one best-selling pendant in our collection, and a large part of its appeal is its shape. Light disperses evenly downward instead of exposing a bare bulb under a broad matte black dome that covers a white opal glass diffuser.
The 16-inch size is 15.75 inches wide and has enough presence for a breakfast nook, a peninsula end, or a longer counter. The matte black finish pairs nicely with black cabinet pulls, faucets, and window frames, and it works in modern farmhouse and contemporary kitchens alike.
The Bolio comes in three sizes. The 12-inch version (11.81 inches across, $136) suits smaller spaces or a pair over a compact island. The 20-inch version (19.69 inches across, $346) works as a single statement over a table.
Practical Details: It's dimmable, needs one E26 medium-base bulb (not included), hangs from a 120-inch black fabric cord, and is rated for damp and dry locations.
Lucent 6-Inch Brass Pendant with Alabaster
Beacon Lighting
Lucent 1 Light Brass Pendant Light 6 Inch Alabaster
$449.00 $613.00
- Spanish alabaster
- Satin brass
- Non-dimmable
The Lucent from Beacon Lighting is the quiet little bit in this group. A round disk of natural Spanish alabaster is framed in satin brass. Alabaster is a natural stone, so the veining is different from piece to piece, and no two fixtures are the same.
The stone filters the light, making it soft. That suits spots where you see the fixture as much as you work under it: above a sink, over a coffee bar, or at the end of a counter. It goes well with warm metals, marble or quartz, and wood tones.
Things to know before you buy: 2 details. The Lucent is rated non-dimmable, so expect it on a regular switch. At 25W, it’s more of an accent light than a primary task light, so pair it with recessed or under-cabinet lighting for prep work. For size variation, there is also a smaller 4-inch version.
The Lucent is currently listed at $449, down from $613.
Laphia 10.75-Inch Modern Gold Pendant
Millennium Lighting
10.75'' Laphia Modern Gold 1 Light Pendant
$75.90
- 8 in W x 10.75 in H
- Etched opal glass
- Dimmable
The budget pick is the Laphia from Millennium Lighting, $75.90. A contemporary gold stem supports an etched opal glass dome, 8" dia. x 10 3/4" h. Etched glass diffuses the bulb, and the gold finish pairs well with brass or gold faucets, cabinet pulls, and light wood.
Better yet, they are affordable enough to pick up more than one. Two Laphia pendants can function over a smaller island (and three over a longer island) as long as the spacing guidelines above allow for space between shades and at the island ends.
The Laphia hangs from downrods, not cords. Includes three rods of 6, 12, and 18 inches for an overall height of 19.5 to 49.5 inches, and the canopy adapts to sloped ceilings. It takes one A19 E26 bulb up to 100W (not included) and is dimmable with a compatible bulb and dimmer. For use in dry locations only.
Best Island Pendant Lights for Small and Large Islands
Usually the main work surface in the kitchen, the light over the island sets the tone for the whole room. The right island pendant lights are determined mostly by one number: the length of the island.
The two-thirds rule should be your check. Multiply the island length by about 0.66 and compare the number to the actual length or overall spread of the fixture. Product names are misleading here. A piece advertised as "42-inch" might be longer if you count the entire body, and a "12.25-inch" pendant might be named for its height, not its width. Always check the dimensions listed.
Separate pendants or one linear fixture?
- Separate pendants give you flexibility. You can space them around stools, use a larger center pendant or change the count later.
- A linear pendant over an island gives a continuous line of light and a cleaner look, with one canopy to center instead of several to align. Whether it simplifies wiring depends on where your ceiling box sits, so check with your electrician.
LED integrated or bulbs? The integrated LEDs have a fixed output and color temperature and do not need bulb changes. With bulb-based fixtures, you have brightness and color temperature options.
The table below compares the three island options. The dimensions, light source, and finishes are taken from the product listings. The recommended sizes of the islands are our design recommendations based on the two-thirds guideline, not manufacturer ratings.
| Product | Length or Width | Light Count | Finish | Recommended Island Size | Current Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arelyn 4 Light Pendant | 18 in wide | 4 (E12 bulbs) | Matte Black | One over 4 to 5 ft, two over about 6 ft | $279.90 |
| Dakota 42-in Linear Pendant | 47.25 in long | Integrated LED | Beech Wood or Walnut | About 6 ft | $478.40 |
| Aryas 60-in Linear Pendant | 60 in long | Integrated LED | Urban Bronze or Vintage Brass | 7.5 to 8 ft | $1,270.40 |
Arelyn 4-Light Matte Black Pendant
Millennium Lighting
12.25'' Arelyn Matte Black 4 Light Pendant
$279.90
- 18 in wide
- 4 lights, E12
- Dimmable
The Arelyn from Millennium Lighting has four lights with a matte black drum frame. One naming note: the 12.25 inches in the name is the height of the fixture. It is 18 inches across, so it has more presence than one might expect from its name.
The size and four-light layout make it a good single fixture over a smaller island, a kitchen table, or an eat-in corner where one pendant has to carry the room. A balanced pair of two Arelyns, one spaced along the length of a longer island. The matte black finish matches the Bolio, so the two can share a kitchen: Arelyn over the island, Bolio over the nook or peninsula.
It also indicates the light count and size difference. The fixture with four bulbs gives more light under one canopy, but still only illuminates 18 inches of the island.
The Arelyn is equipped with 4 E12 candelabra bulbs up to 60W each (not included) and is dimmable with compatible bulbs. The frame has no shade, but the decorative bulbs are worth a look. It has 3 downrods and a 12-inch chain to a total height of 19 to 60 inches. It is rated for dry use.
Dakota 42-Inch Steel Linear Pendant
Kuzco
Dakota 42-in Steel Linear Pendant
$478.40 $598.00
- 47.25 in long
- LED, 3000K
- Beech Wood or Walnut
Wood-to-island light. Dakota from Kuzco. Slim steel body in Beech Wood or Walnut, with a frosted acrylic diffuser along the base. Beech reads Light & Scandinavian. Walnut is darker and works well in transitional kitchens with warm cabinets and natural stone.
Make sure you measure the length before you buy. It is advertised as a 42-inch fixture, but the listed dimensions are 47.25 inches long, 2.875 inches wide, and 1.75 inches tall. The two-thirds rule means that’s okay for an island about 6 feet across. The skinny profile lets you see across the kitchen.
Integrated LED light source: 20W, 1,503 lumens delivered, 3000K warm white, and 90 CRI so food and finishes look true to color. Can be dimmed down to 10% with a compatible TRIAC or ELV dimmer (sold separately). It is suspended from up to 120” of white braided wire, adaptable to sloped ceilings and rated for dry locations.
The Dakota is currently listed at $478.40, down from $598, in both finishes.
Aryas 60-Inch Steel Linear Pendant
Alora
Aryas 60-in Steel Linear Pendant
$1,270.40 $1,588.00
- 60 in long
- LED, 3000K
- Urban Bronze or Vintage Brass
The Aryas is the statement piece of this guide. It is a full 60 inches in height, designed by Ryan Pauly for the Alora brand, with a slim 1.75-inch profile and 15-inch fixture height. It is good for long islands that are about 7.5 to 8 feet and open-plan kitchens where you can see the island from the living area.
Finish shifts the tone. Urban Bronze is a deep, almost black tone that works well in modern and industrial kitchens. Vintage brass is warm and works with brass hardware or the Lucent and Laphia accents above.
It’s the brightest fixture here, delivering 2,080 lumens at 3000K and 90 CRI from 48W of integrated LED. Compatible with TRIAC, ELV, or 0-10V controls (sold separately), dimmable from 10% to 100%. The Aryas hang from downrods (not a cable) with up to 46 inches of rod, and it adjusts to sloped ceilings up to 45 degrees. This is rated for dry areas.
The Aryas is currently listed at $1,270.40, down from $1,588, and both finishes show as available.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Many Pendant Lights Should Go Over a Kitchen Island?
Two or three pendants are the most common choices, but the right count depends on island length, fixture size and spacing. A 6-foot island often takes two medium pendants, while an 8-foot island can fit three. A large single pendant or one linear fixture can also replace a group.
How High Should Pendant Lights Hang Above an Island?
A common starting point is 30 to 36 inches from the countertop to the bottom of the fixture. Hang higher for tall ceilings, tall household members or wide shades that block views across the room. Always check the manufacturer's minimum hanging height and installation instructions.
Should Kitchen Pendants Match the Island Pendants?
They do not have to match exactly, but they should relate. Sharing a finish, such as matte black or brass, ties different shapes together. Matching fixtures suit kitchens with one sightline, while coordinating pieces, like a linear island light with a smaller sink pendant, work well in open-plan layouts. If your kitchen opens into a dining room, see our guide to lighting an open dining area.
Is a Linear Pendant Better Than Separate Pendants Over an Island?
Neither is better in every kitchen. A linear pendant gives a continuous line of light and a clean look over long islands. Separate pendants offer more flexibility in spacing, style and count. Compare the fixture's real length with your island, and check your ceiling box position before deciding.
What Bulb Color Temperature Works Best for Kitchen Pendants?
Most kitchens look best in warm white. 2700K feels cozy and works well for dining and evening use, while 3000K is slightly crisper for prep. Bulb-based fixtures let you choose. Integrated LED fixtures, like the Dakota and Aryas at 3000K, have a set color temperature, so check the specs first.
Refresh Your Kitchen with the Right Pendant Lighting
A fall kitchen refresh can start with the lights you look at every day. Measure your island, pick a finish that matches your hardware, and choose fixtures that give enough light for prep and a softer level for dinner. Then browse pendant lighting by size and style, or see what is marked down on our Fall Home Upgrade sale page.
